Police allege man punches girlfriend, leaves her by side of the road

Authorities arrested him Tuesday for assault

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Bethlehem police have arrested a man who allegedly threatened to slit his girlfriend’s throat before throwing her out of his SUV last weekend.

Authorities said Michael Kovacs, of the 1800 block of Budd Avenue in Bethlehem, is facing charges of simple assault, harassment and terroristic threats in connection with the alleged attack late Friday night.

Police responded to the area of West Lehigh Street and 13th Avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m. Friday to investigate a reported assault. Authorities arrived to find a woman with a bruised left cheek and bruises on her right palm.

She told police that Kovacs, who had been drinking, was driving them to his Budd Avenue home, when they started arguing about her phone. The argument escalated, and Kovacs allegedly punched the victim in the face, according to court records.

She swung back, prompting the 47-year-old to pull over near 13th Avenue, grab her neck and slowly twist her head, according to records. The victim alleges that Kovacs then reached toward his pocket, where he carried a pocketknife.

Kovacs allegedly threatened to slit her throat, and his girlfriend scrambled into the backseat. The victim reported that Kovacs finally pulled over, pulled her out of his Isuzu Trooper by her hair and drove away.

District Judge Michael Faulkner signed an arrest warrant for Kovacs this weekend. He was arrested Tuesday and arraigned by District Judge Wayne Maura.

Kovacs failed to post $10,000 bail and was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled for March 7.
