Carjack suspect arrested

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - An armed carjacker pursued by police through Lehigh County was nabbed in Allentown, but not before three bystanders were injured in a crash caused by the suspect, according to authorities.

The male suspect, who police said robbed a gold Saturn SUV in neighboring Whitehall, was caught in Allentown around 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Whitehall police say it all started around 8:40 a.m. at the Whitehall Mini Mart in the 3600 block of Lehigh Street, when the suspect -- identified as 28-year-old Richard Bauer of Bethlehem -- asked for a car ride.

During the ride, Bauer showed a knife and demanded the victim drive him to an ATM in an effort to get cash, police said.

When this was unsuccessful,Bauer had the victim drive to Lowe's to make a purchase to get cash back, which was also unsuccessful. Bauer then forced the victim out of the vehicle after driving to Whitehall High School, police said.

Bauer was then seen on a police camera driving from Whitehall into Allentown on a police camera.

At this point, Allentown police went into action, attempting to stop the SUV at 4th and Walnut streets. Police say Bauer rammed into a police car and then headed toward Union Street.

He continued on Union Street, where he crashed into an an occupied vehicle, injuring three people. Allentown Police say the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

During the crash,Bauer's vehicle was disabled, and police were able to take him into custody.

An Allentown officer sustained minor injuries during the pursuit, according to police.

Crews at the scene of the crash say Bauer was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The investigation has been taken over by the Lehigh County District Attorney's Office's Auto Theft Task Force.
