Police find 2 children after alleged hotel heroin buy

Authorities investigating complaints of dealing

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Police said they found two children inside a Super 8 hotel room after arresting an Allentown pair for allegedly dealing heroin.

Allentown police arrested Braulio D. Torres and Carmen I. Martinez-Velez Friday night at the hotel in the 1000 block of Airport Road. District Judge Donna Butler arraigned them Saturday morning, setting bail at $150,000 for each.

Authorities said they received several complaints that Martinez-Velez was selling heroin out of room 225 at the Super 8, according to court records. Investigators said they were provided a cell phone number and began texting whoever was on the other end.

An officer was instructed to head to the Super 8, which is where detectives set up surveillance. A man later identified as Torres emerged from a room and allegedly offered to sell the officer six bags of heroin at $10 each, according to records. He told police he was staying in room 225.

Police detained Torres and called the cell phone number, directing the woman who answered the phone to come to the motel room. Authorities said Martinez-Velez had a room key and that her cell phone rang when a detective called the number he used to set up the buy.

Authorities said they found 21 Alprazolam pills and heroin inside a small purse in the room. Family members later arrived at the motel to take custody of two children inside the room.

Court records list the same North Nagle Street address for the 32-year-old Martinez-Velez and the 21-year-old Torres, but records do not specify the nature of their relationship.

Police charged Martinez-Velez with possession with intent to deliver, conspiracy, criminal use of a communication device and three counts of drug possession. Torres, meanwhile, faces possession with intent to deliver, conspiracy and drug possession charges.

Neither posted bail, so they were sent to Lehigh County Jail to await preliminary hearings scheduled for May 22.
