Suspect arrested in bank robbery that led to police pursuit

John Cruz arrested in stolen car.

UPPER SAUCON TWP., Pa. - Police have arrested an Allentown man after a police chase and crash in Lehigh County, stemming from an armed bank robbery in Emmaus Wednesday morning.

John Cruz, 41, robbed the Key Bank in Emmaus around 9:20 a.m, according to police. He displayed a handgun and stole an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police say he then took off in a red SUV, which was stolen from Fountain Hill earlier Wednesday morning.

"I was loading my  vehicle to go do laundry and I saw a vehicle going very fast down our road, it happened twice in fact," said a woman named Danielle who lives nearby. "He kind of went in a circle."

The witness, Danielle, says the red Jeep was going at least 40 mph in a 25 mph zone.

Cruz led police on a chase that ended with a crash at Route 309 and Center Valley Road in Upper Saucon Township. Police say a state police trooper used an "intervention technique" with his police vehicle to stop Cruz.

Cruz was then arrested.

Officials say he is facing charges of armed robbery, simple assault, terroristic threats and theft and receiving stolen property.

Cruz told officers the gun was a toy gun he threw away after the bank robbery.

No injuries were reported in the robbery or the crash.
