Police investigate murder-suicide in Allentown

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -

Authorities are investigating a murder-suicide in Allentown.

According to officials, Jose Santos, 60, shot and killed his daughter, Maria Santos, 18, at their home in the 600 block of North Jefferson Street.

According to the Lehigh County Coroner's Office, the incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. Saturday morning.

Police say a family member ran out of the house when he heard gunshots and called police.

According to police, they arrived to find Jose and Maria Santos dead. Police say Jose Santos left a note confirming what had taken place.

Family members tell 69 News Jose Santos had sent threatening text messages in the days leading up to the shooting.

The coroner's office pronounced Maria Santos dead at 3:02 a.m. Her death was attributed to a gunshot wound to the body. The coroner ruled that her manner of death was homicide.

"She was a smart girl. She was going to do something with herself. Just to hear this tragic news is very, very difficult," Maria Santos' cousin John Molina said.

"I still think I'm sleeping … I can't believe it," he said.

Jose Santos was pronounced dead at the same time. According to the coroner, Jose Santos shot himself in the body.

Autopsies are scheduled for Monday, according to the coroner.

The Lehigh County Coroner's Office and the Allentown Police Department are conducting the investigation and are being assisted by Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin.
