Police: Man assaults clerk who tried to foil robbery

The 29-year-old allegedly stole $600 bracelet

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - An Allentown man is facing robbery and assault charges after allegedly kicking the jewelry store employee, who tried to prevent him from stealing a bracelet.

Authorities arrested Jose Reyes late Thursday afternoon for allegedly robbing HY Jewelry at 728 W. Hamilton St. and kicking a staff member in the head.

Allentown police responded for a robbery report just after 4 p.m. Witnesses allege Reyes walked into the store with a chain necklace that he wanted to return for a refund, according to court records.

An argument erupted after staff refused, and Reyes then asked to see a 14K gold bracelet in the display case reportedly worth $600, according to records. Bracelet in hand, Reyes tried to run out of the store.

That prompted an employee to grab his car keys to prevent him from stealing the bracelet. Police said an angry Reyes jumped over the counter and began throwing things.

Reyes allegedly kicked the woman in the head and threatened to kill her, if she didn’t hand over the keys. Staff said he eventually ran out of the store with the bracelet.

Police managed to locate Reyes, who allegedly admitted to trying to steal the bracelet.

Authorities charged Reyes, of North Third Street, with a felony count of robbery, misdemeanor counts of simple assault and retail theft and a summary count of harassment. District Judge Patricia Engler arraigned the 29-year-old early Friday morning, setting bail at $100,000.

After failing to post bail, he was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for later this week.
