Police: Man assaults girlfriend, chases hotel staff

S. WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - An Allentown man faces assault and harassment charges after allegedly attacking his girlfriend in a hotel lobby and chasing a member of the hotel staff.

South Whitehall Township police were called to the Howard Johnson hotel at 3220 Hamilton Blvd. about 1:45 p.m. New Year’s Day to investigate a reported assault.

Authorities allege Melvin O. Sanchez-DeJesus, of West Liberty Street in Allentown, had been arguing with his girlfriend in the hotel lobby. When he tried to grab her phone, the 29-year-old allegedly shoved and pushed his girlfriend, eventually grabbing her by the hair and throwing her to the ground, according to court records.

Police allege Sanchez-DeJesus then jumped over the front desk and began chasing the desk attendant. He eventually grabbed the victim with both hands by her hair and dragged her out of the lobby, according to court records.

Police charged Sanchez-DeJesus with single counts of simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct. District Judge Joseph Pochron arraigned him Monday night, setting bail at $5,000.

Sanchez-DeJesus was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a Jan. 8 preliminary hearing after failing to post bail.
