Police: Michigan man pulls knife during drunken walk through hotel

South Whitehall police found him at another hotel

S. WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - A Michigan man is facing disorderly conduct charges after an alleged drunken, obscenity-laced stroll through a South Whitehall Township hotel that eventually saw him pull a knife out of his pocket.

South Whitehall Township police arrested Robert K. Wingate, of Weidman, Mich., Saturday night at the Comfort Suites, 3712 Hamilton Blvd. District Judge Wayne Maura arraigned the 39-year-old early Sunday morning, setting bail at $50,000.

Township police were dispatched to the hotel after a witness reported seeing a drunk man screaming obscenities while walking the halls, according to court records. The witness said he confronted the man later identified as Wingate because there were several children in the area.

The witness, who provided a description, accused Wingate of pulling out a folding knife with a 4- to 6-inch blade. Police asked a group of men at the bar about Wingate, who they identified and said was staying at the nearby Holiday Inn.

Police tracked down Wingate in his room at the Holiday Inn. He matched the description provided by the witness, and an office allegedly found a folding knife in his pants pocket. Authorities said she smelled of alcohol and appeared unsteady on his feet.

Police charged Wingate with single counts of terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. He failed to post bail and was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for Oct. 15.
