Police probe rash of thefts from cars on hotel parking lots

UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - Police are investigating several reports of car break-ins at hotels in Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County.

The most recent happened over the weekend when five cars in four hotel parking lots were targeted overnight Saturday into Sunday, police said. Incidents were reported at the Hampton Inn on Keebler Way, Stay Bridge Suites on Star Road, Hilton Garden Inn on Sycamore Road and Sleep Inn on Star Road.

The cars that were broken into at Hampton Inn and Stay Bridge Suites had nothing stolen from them, police said. A car at Sleep Inn had a wallet stolen. Police said items were taken from two cars at Hilton Garden Inn. One had a laptop computer, clothing and checkbook stolen and another car, which police said had no signs of forced entry, was missing a GPS.

"There is some video. We're in the process of checking that. The difficult thing is these thefts are occurring overnight so a lot of the guests are sleeping obviously, traffic is low at that time," said Lieutenant Peter Nickischer, Upper Macungie Township police. "In the past three weeks, we've had a total of 10 thefts or attempted thefts from vehicles in the area, all occurring at hotels."

Nickischer said there is a possibly all of the incidents are connected.

"The majority, if not all, of these vehicles had one of the rear windows broken out," he said. "I can't help but wonder where the suspects are coming from. I'm not so sure to believe that they're necessarily local but I don't know yet."

Police remind hotel guests to take their things with them into their room or, at the very least, hide their valuables in their trunk.

"It is very frustrating. Upper Macungie is a great place to live and work and we don't want to see people become victims  of crime here," said Nickischer.
