Police shoot, kill man who had incendiary device around his neck, authorities said

Shooting in Lower Mt. Bethel, Northampton County

LOWER MOUNT BETHEL TWP., Pa. - In Northampton County, state police troopers shot and killed a suicidal man who threatened to blow himself up with an incendiary device wrapped around his neck, authorities said.

Police were called to a home in the 1300 block of Good Road in Lower Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County around 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

"There was some type of threat made toward police that they felt they had to use force," Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said shortly after the shooting happened.

On Saturday night, authorities released more details.

The coroner identified the man who was shot and killed as 47-year-old Anthony Paul Ardo, of the same address to which state police responded.

Captain Richard D'Ambrosio, the commander of State Police Troop M, offered the following account of what happened:

He said troopers responded to the Lower Mount Bethel home for the report of a suicidal man. When troopers got there, the man was not home, but called a family member who was present and continued to threaten suicide.

"The subject advised his family member that if police were called, he would blow himself up with an incendiary device," D'Ambrosio said.

Police said the man then arrived at the scene with a device around his neck and a fuse attached.

"After ignoring several commands to get out of the car and onto the ground, the subject attempted to light the device near the troopers and was shot by the troopers," D'Ambrosio said.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

D'Ambrosio said the device the man threatened to kill himself with turned out to be a firework mortar.

The troopers were not injured.

State police said the investigation in ongoing.

Authorities will still need to make a formal determination on whether the use of deadly force by the officers was justified.
