Police: Witnesses aid woman in LANTA bus terminal attack

Man seen on surveillance video strangling victim

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Authorities in Lehigh County said bystanders outside the LANTA Allentown Transportation Center managed to pull a man away from the woman he was allegedly slapping and choking.

Tyshawn Whitehead, no address given, is now facing assault charges in connection to the alleged attack in the 100 block of North Sixth Street shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday. District Judge Donna Butler arraigned the 22-year-old early Thursday morning, setting bail at $15,000.

Allentown police were dispatched to the LANTA terminal at 110 N. Sixth St. to investigate an alleged assault. The victim told officers that Whitehead began screaming in her face, pushing her and chasing her around the lot, according to court records.

When she sat down on a bench, Whitehead allegedly pushed her face several times and began choking her, according to records. The victim told police that she suffers from asthma and couldn’t breathe.

She reported feeling dizzy and lightheaded as Whitehead allegedly kept yelling at her, grabbing her by the chest and slapping her.

Police surveillance video allegedly shows Whitehead attacking the woman, who put her head in her hands at one point and tried to cover herself. Surveillance video also showed bystanders pulling Whitehead away from the woman.

Court records do not indicate what, if anything, precipitated the attack or whether Whitehead knows the victim. But records do indicate that the charges are domestic-related.

Police charged him with a felony count of strangulation along with simple assault and harassment. After failing to post bail, Whitehead was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 5.
