PPL rate hike to take effect

At midnight Wednesday night, the price of electricity for many PPL customers is going to spike.

"It's a 14 percent increase," said PPL Electric Utilities Regional Affairs Director Carol Obando-Derstine.

Price changes like this can happen every six months.

"We have a change in our price to compare two times a year, June 1st and December 1st. It basically depends on the cost of energy," she said.

If the impending price increase feels like a kick in the gut, PPL said there is something that could make it a little better.

"One option for customers is the standard offer," said Obando-Derstine. "What the standard offer means is a 7 percent reduction in the price to compare."

The 7 percent reduction applies to the generation portion of a customer's bill.

However, a word of caution -

"It may not apply to everyone, it may not be savings for all customers," said Obando-Derstine.

The people who may not save are those who get their electricity from a different supplier.

Here's what that means:

If you live in PPL's service area, you can have PPL supply your energy, or you can use a competitive supplier, and PPL will deliver it using their poles and wires.

If another company currently supplies it for you, the standard offer might not be a better deal, so make sure you investigate.

Customers have until 11:59pm Wednesday night to access the standard offer, at pplelectric.com/shopping.
