Reaction mixed over Allentown's school uniforms

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - You're getting a first look at the new normal for Allentown School District students come the fall.

eaders unveiled the uniforms at a meeting this week.

The sample elementary school uniform includes a white or light blue polo with navy pants, shorts or a navy jumper. Middle schoolers would wear white or maroon polos with black pants or khaki pants, shorts, capris or a skirt. Students at Dieruff High are shown wearing a navy or gray polo, with black pants or khaki pants, shorts, capris or a skirt. Over at Allen High School it will be a royal blue or yellow polo paired with black pants or khaki pants, shorts, capris or a skirt. Students and parents we spoke with in the district say they're on board.

"It's a way to show school spirit," shared Allen High senior Joel Peralta. "And it's a way for us to be unified as one."

"It's really excellent because it definitely symbolizes our school and just everybody will be a lot happier I feel because everybody will be in the same clothes," added Keion White, a senior at Allen High School.

But not everyone shares the same sentiment. Close to 200 viewers sounded off on our Facebook page. Amy Jeschke says "I think it's a horrible idea. It doesn't really do anything but make parents shell out more money."

Les Beyer writes "I can see where different colors for different schools could create yet another reason for rivalry."

School leaders say the uniforms will save parents money, and they plan to work with anyone who has economic difficulties.

"You can get khakis and a dress shirt anywhere," said White. "You can go to the thrift store and have your whole uniform ready."

Flyers outlining the dress code were sent home Friday and will go out again Monday.
