Reading woman identified as burned body found in Salisbury

Burned body identified

SALISBURY TWP., Pa. - Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim has identified a burned body found last month as that of a Reading woman.

Jennifer Velez-Negron's burning body was found in a wooded area behind 75 Chestnut Hill Rd. in Salisbury Township on Dec. 27, the coroner said.

An autopsy the next day determined Velez-Negon, 26, died of suffocation and thermal injuries, said the coroner, who ruled her death a homicide.

The condition of the woman's body, the coroner said, required additional testing in order to make an identification. During the autopsy, officials noticed "Javi" tattooed on the right side of her neck, but it wasn't enough to make a positive identification, the coroner said. Fingerprints and dental comparisons weren't available either.

"With the assistance of the media and the public, we were placed in contact with possible family members of Jane Doe," said Scott Grim, the Lehigh County coroner. "DNA samples were collected from those members to assist with positive identification."

The positive identification through DNA testing was made Thursday.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about Velez-Negron and the homicide is asked to contact the Salisbury Township police at 610-797-1447 or the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force at 610-4347-5252.
