Resident of Upper Saucon home where standoff suspects died speaks out

deadly standoff

UPPER SAUCON TWP., Pa. - The man whose home was at the center of Saturday's deadly standoff in Upper Saucon Township is speaking out.

Authorities said the suspects, Eric Messick and Emily Fatzinger, died in an apparent murder-suicide in a home off Lanark Road.

Police said the pair opened fire on police following an attempted traffic stop late Saturday morning. Late Saturday night, they were found dead in the attic of the home where Dave Stahler lives.

Stahler was still visibly shaken when he spoke with 69 News Sunday. He said he's not sure how he'll cope with what happened to him Saturday.

He told 69 News that he left his home Saturday morning to go shopping, and when he returned around 1 p.m., he was on the phone with a friend when he realized something wasn't right.

He said several things were out of place and out of the ordinary at his home, located off of Lanark Road.
His friend who he was on the phone with at the time, told him to leave the home and call for help.

Stahler said he keeps thinking over and over if he had gone further into his home during yesterday's incident, he may now be dead.

It would be more than 10 hours before Stahler would be able to get into his home -- a home he said he's still not sure will ever feel like a home again.

Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin said police used a bomb robot and released tear gas into Stahler's home. The home investigators believed 25-year-old Emily Fatzinger of Pike County and 33-year-old Eric Messick of Walnutport, Northampton Count were hiding in.

When police got inside, they found the pair dead from an apparent murder-suicide.

Stahler told 69 News that his home is significantly damaged from the police activity and that he can't live in it. Earlier Sunday, he gathered a few of his belongings to take to a local hotel where he plans to stay until repairs can be made to the house.

Stahler said he'll try to live in the house again, but he's just not sure if he'll feel comfortable.
