Restoration project begins at Monocacy Park in Bethlehem

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - An environmental center in Bethlehem has its summertime assignment: The Gertrude B. Fox Center is taking on a restoration project at Monocacy Park.

Volunteers, interns and work crews will stabilize and restore the stone piers of the west entryway and work on a cement and stone picnic table.

The structures were originally built by men who were in need of work during the Great Depression as part of the "Works Progress Administration," or WPA.

"They brought in largely unskilled people to lay up the stone and they did great work. It's held up well, but there's increasing problems with deterioration," said John Harry.

The Fox Center is also trying to raise the money needed to restore other features in the park, including two stone benches and the eastern gateway.
