Road officials explain what motorists can expect tomorrow

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Allentown Streets Department crews are staying busy.

"It's been a constant battle. We haven't had a break in the action all day," Streets Department Superintendent Mark Shahda said Tuesday night.

Streets that had been plowed during the day were soon covered with snow again.

"It's mainly a plowing operation at this point. Once the snow subsides then it will become a salting operation," Shahda told 69 News.

"The morning commute will be touching up the mains and doing spot checks on the mains, making sure roads are safe for travel," he said.

"We're pre-treating our salt with calcium chloride so we're hoping freezing won't take place," Shahda added, but said black ice is a possibility in the morning.

According to Shahda, main roads in Allentown will be plowed and passable Wednesday morning and half of secondary roads should be complete by the morning. Crews will get to the remaining streets as soon as possible, he said.

"We have our full complement of 36 trucks out tonight and then tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. is our changeover where we'll have the 40 trucks out doing the final cleanup. It'll be all hands on deck at that point," he said.

Shahda advises drivers not to be on the roads if they don't have to be. For people who do have to drive, give yourself plenty of time.

PennDOT tells 69 News it will also have crews working on roads overnight, working until the roads are clear.
