Saucon Valley School Board won't take new auditorium seats sitting down

LOWER SAUCON TWP., Pa. - If you're going to buy a car, you have to test drive it. And if you're going to buy a seat, you have to sit on it.

That's exactly what Director Charles Bartolet did during Tuesday night's Saucon Valley School District Board of Directors meeting as the legislative body considered buying auditorium seats for the high school.

As an added inducement, the administration provided a sample chair for members to look at and take out for a spin during the meeting.

"Well, we're spending the taxpayers' money for it," the director said as he sat down on the test chair.

As it turned out, however, the taxpayers aren't going to be paying for it, as the board rejected spending $161,800 to replace the 864 seats in the facility.

Bartolet was one of the "no" votes on the expenditure Tuesday night, although he said he could be persuaded to change his mind, provided Superintendent Sandra Fellin produced a budget that holds the line on taxes.

The board did approve allocating $47,176 on the purchase of a 2014 Ford Super Duty F-350 dump truck with a plow.

A total of $31,985 will come from the district's maintenance budget and the remaining $15,191 will be drawn from the transfer of funds from budget reserve.

In other business, the board set June 13th as the date for graduation for the Class of 2014.

Fellin noted that should the district be forced to cancel any additional days because of snow in the waning days of winter, they would be made up by utilizing the current holiday of Thursday  April 17 before Easter Sunday, and if a second is required, that would be made up on Monday, April 21 following Easter Sunday.

And the board formally accepted the retirement of Fellin, effective July 4th. She had made the announcement at the board's February 26th meeting.

Fellin indicated, when asked by Director Susan Baxter, that she would be amiable to discussing changing the date of her retirement with the board if asked.
