SAUCON VALLE, Pa. - Saucon Valley School District hopes to repair a retention pond and flashing on the roof of the high school in the near future.
District Director of Operations, Wally Zimpfer, stressed to Saucon Valley School Board members at Tuesday evening's meeting the importance of investing money into both projects.
The retention pond is located at the western end of the campus.
The pond, according to Zimpfer, is defective.
"The current system has failed," he said. "We have a huge wash out at the mouth."
The project will entail a contractor entering the retention pond and filling it in.
Zimpfer told board members he is seeking quotes for the project. The first quote the district received was in the amount of $19,546.
Board President, Michael Karabin, asked Zimpfer what the result will be if the district does not repair the pond.
"We have to do something," Zimpfer said. "It's currently four feet deep."
The flashing on the high school roof also must be repaired, Zimpfer said. The project would consist of sealing and caulking the joints.
The flashing on the high school roof has not been replaced since 1968-69.
To date, the district has received a quote for the project in the amount of $9,450.
District Superintendent, Sandra Fellin, told board members money is available for both projects.
"They [projects] are quite expensive," she said. "We will be looking to use the fund balance. These two could fall under capital."
Zimpfer said he will continue to seek quotes from additional contractors and present the board with the quotes at a future board meeting.
In other business, Fellin lauded Assistant Superintendent Carl Atkinson for serving the district since August 2008.
Atkinson will be moving on to serve as assistant superintendent at the School District of Springfield Township in Montgomery County.
"His time here, he really pulled curriculum together," Fellin said of Atkinson. "He's been nothing less than a team player, colleague and a friend."
The district is currently working on selecting a new assistant superintendent.
Also during the meeting, Saucon Valley resident and parent of a middle school student Leslie Repyneck asked the board what the percentages are of teachers who reside in the district and those who reside outside of the district.
Karabin told Repyneck the board will provide her with the information at the next board meeting, Aug. 12.
Board members Bryan Eichfeld, Edward Inghrim, Sandra Miller and Mark Sivak were not present for the meeting.
