Scooter stolen; 'It's the model I had always wanted'

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A disabled man in Allentown is hoping a good Samaritan will step forward after something important to him was taken overnight.

Jason Stauffer has cerebral palsy and travels mostly by motorized scooter.

"My legs are weaker than my upper body, and it is difficult for me to walk long distances," Stauffer said.

About four months ago, the 33-year-old man purchased a custom-built chair. The scooter is four-wheel drive and allows him to travel outdoors to get to places like work.

"It's the model I had always wanted," said Stauffer, who spent more than six months trying to save the money to pay for it.

It wasn't easy. Stauffer works just 24 hours a week.

Either Sunday night or early Monday morning, police said someone took the bike from Stauffer's shed in the 500 block of Auburn Street. Stauffer said he is desperate to get it back.

"I have to go to work. I have to use that mobility scooter to get to work, and if I don't have the scooter, it makes it harder to get back and forth to work," Stauffer said.

Without the scooter, Stauffer said he has limited options to get there. He will either need to make the three-block walk with his crutches or rely on someone to drop him off. Neither option is ideal.

"I am very upset. I am mad. I just wish the person would come forward," Stauffer said.

If he gets his chair back undamaged, Stauffer said he likely won't press charges. Otherwise, he'll leave it up to police.

Anyone with information should call authorities immediately.
