Sounds of revival are crafted at Bethlehem Steel

VIDEO: ArtsQuest & artists team up...

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Billy Joel's song "Allentown" described the demise of steel towns, but soon a new song will talk about their rebirth.

ArtsQuest is teaming up with a prolific singer-songwriter and award-winning docujournalist to bring "The Song of Bethlehem" to the masses.

At the former Bethlehem Steel turn and grind shop, the sounds of revival are being crafted.

Singer songwriter Ken Goldstein and award winning producer -- Director Peter von Puttkamer -- have teamed up with ArtsQuest to capture how "The Steel" transformed from abandoned to abundant due in part to the arts.

"We are today doing a version of the song that I wrote 30 years ago. I wrote it after my first exposure to the closures of the Bethlehem Steel company," said Goldstein.

Goldstein learned about Bethlehem Steel through a college friend whose family was impacted after the steel closed.

Years later, he got back in touch with a childhood friend: ArtsQuest COO Curt Mosel.

Mosel says Goldstein was invited to play at Musikfest last year and after ArtsQuest officials heard the updated song, the idea of a video promoting Bethlehem's revival was born.

Today, local musicians, singers and filmmakers are helping bring "The Song of Bethlehem" to the big screen.

"Ken has been telling me for quite some time about Bethlehem and the ArtsQuest project to reinvigorate the town. It's kind of a role model for this kind of community." said Puttkamer.

Goldstein says the project is part music video, part documentary.

He says he hopes to have it completed in the new year before he and his band "LA Hustle" leave for a tour in Australia.

Mosel says the film will be used to showcase the impact ArtsQuest, the Banana Factory and Musikfest have had on the community.
