Speed limits reduced on area highways

Due to the snow and existing roadway conditions, officials have reduced speed limits on some areas of area highways.

PennDOT is temporarily reducing the speed limit to 45 mph on Interstates 78 and 176, Routes 22, 33 and 422.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 76) is operating under a weather emergency between the Blue Mountain (#201) and Morgantown (#298) exits. Speed limits are reduced to 45 mph.

In other areas of the turnpike: I-76/I-276 Morgantown (#298) to the Delaware River Bridge (#359) and NE Extension I-476 Mid-County (#20) and CLarks Summit (#131), drivers are encouraged to reduce speeds and keep alert for quickly changing weather conditions.

According to PennDOT officials, drivers should anticipate slow or stopped traffic in their lane of travel, and watch for emergency crews working on teh roadway.

Remove all snow and ice from your vehicle before getting on the highway, and be sure to turn on your headlights whenever the windshield wipers are in use.

Turnpike maintenance crews, safety patrols, and State Police are increasing forces to assist stranded motorists, keep traffic moving and respond to emergencies. All abandoned vehicles are being removed from the Turnpike at this time.

In case of an accident, breakdown or other emergency, motorists can utilize the yellow emergency call boxes on the shoulder, dial *11 or 1-800-332-3880 to receive aid.

Be prepared to give your milepost location and direction of travel and move the involved vehicles out of active travel lanes if possible.

Motorists can turn to 1640 AM for traffic and emergency roadway updates.

PennDOT officials advise motorists to check out conditions before leaving. To plan ahead, check traffic advisories at 1-866-976-TRIP (8747) or visit live travel conditions map.
