Students, community mourn death of Lafayette student

EASTON, Pa. - An autopsy is scheduled Wednesday on a Lafayette College student who died Monday night after he was found outside of a dorm over the weekend.

McCrae Williams was a rising lacrosse star and a Lafayette College team recruit.

Many of his teammates gathered Tuesday night to mourn his death on the campus quad.

The college's counselor and president spoke to the students and staff.

They say Williams sudden death has come as a shock to everyone.

"To just comfort in another and do what they could as a community to try and make sense out of something really doesn't make any sense," said Mark Eyerly, a spokesman for Lafayette College.

Easton police say the 19-year-old, a freshman student from Massachusetts, was found outside of a Lafayette College dorm on Sunday afternoon.

In a statement, Williams' former prep school says he fell and suffered a serious head injury. He was pronounced dead at the hospital on Monday afternoon.

Investigators say they are looking into a "chain of events" that began on Saturday and if alcohol was a factor in Williams death.

"Some incident took place that possibly contributed to this medical emergency and we're trying to determine what exactly occurred, why it occurred, and who else played a role if anybody," said Easton police Lt. Matthew Gerould.

Williams' teammates and classmates were quiet as they left the vigil. Eyerly said the mood on campus has been somber.

"You go away to college, first couple weeks there is a tragic event like this one, it's something incredibly hard to deal with," Eyerly said.
