Teen bicyclist dies of injuries from crash with truck

LOWER NAZARETH TWP., Pa. - A 16-year-old Northampton County boy has died after being hit by a tractor trailer in Lower Nazareth Township on Tuesday.

Many of the people 69 News spoke with said they knew Austin Bringenberg because he rode a bicycle with a motor on it.

A friend said it will be tough not hearing him ride that bike in the area anymore. Alex Filbert didn't think he would be starting his morning making a cross for his friend.

"I just thought it would be right, in my opinion," said Filbert, who has known Austin Bringenberg since elementary school. "So, I just thought I would come out here for about 15 minutes, make this and put it out there."

The cross is in memory of Bringenberg, a Nazareth Area High School student.

"I knew him because of the bike," said Filbert. "I always heard him riding it around town. It just kind of stuck out. I knew it was him."

Investigators said they believe Bringenberg was heading to his home two miles away from where the accident took place at Route 191 and Hanoverville Road.

Police said the teen turned left from the shoulder of the road and collided with an oncoming tractor trailer.

"You've really got to be attentive on a road like that. It's a state highway, very heavily traveled, and unfortunately the truck driver saw him after he collided," said Chief Roy Seiple, Colonial Regional Police Department.

Bringenberg died of his injuries early Wednesday morning.

As for now, police said no criminal charges will be filed.

"It was really an unfortunate accident, and our condolences really go to Austin's family for this," said Seiple.

"It's horrible. Can't really say much else," added Filbert.

Filbert told 69 News that friends have been talking about the accident on Facebook and trying to use the social media site to encourage each other during this time of grieving.
