Teen on motorized bike hospitalized following accident with tractor trailer

Accident closed Nazareth Pike/Route 191 from Hanoverville Road to Brodhead Road

Bicyclist, tractor-trailer collide

LOWER NAZARETH TWP., Pa. - A 17 year-old boy riding a motorized bike was taken to the hospital following a collision with a tractor trailer in Lower Nazareth Township Tuesday.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. in the 200 block of Nazareth Pike/Route 191.

Colonial Regional Police Chief Roy Seiple says the boy was riding his bike north on Route 191 when he went to make a left at the intersection with Hanoverville Road.

He turned left in front of a tractor trailer that had a green light, Seiple said.

"The boy was hit by the tractor trailer and then thrown backwards into the vehicle that was traveling northbound," said Colonial Regional Police Sgt. George Cuchran. "So he hit the tractor trailer first and then he got thrown backwards from the impact and ended up hitting the other vehicle in the opposite lane of travel, also."

"The boy was wearing a helmet. The helmet is destroyed now," Cuchran added.

The teen, suffering from head trauma, was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where police said the boy is in critical condition.

Neighbor Veronica Kish said she ran out to help.

"My kids, I heard them, I came downstairs sand I heard them screaming, yelling, 'mommy somebody got hit, I don't think they're alive, run,'" she told 69 News.

"I just bent down and started rubbing his back and praying," she said. "A lot of people were scared. They didn't know what to do. He actually was not breathing for a long period of time."

Police said the tractor trailer driver will likely not face charges, but the accident reconstruction team is still investigating.

Route 191 was closed from Hanoverville Road in Lower Nazareth Township to Brodhead Road in Bethlehem Township for about four hours after the accident.
