The face behind Musikfest's 2018 artwork

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - From tattoos to commercial art.

Dan Mugrauer, a six-year tattoo artist of Blood Moon Tattoo Syndicate in Ambler, is the creator of this year's official Musikfest artwork.

The 28-year-old was approached by ArtsQuest last year and asked to take on the task of creating the most well-known image of the festival to be featured on apparel, posters, and its iconic mugs.

“This poster not only honors our festival and our city’s history, it incorporates many of those timeless elements that people love about Musikfest. We were looking for something totally different this year and Dan really nailed it with this beautiful work of art," said Kassie Hilgert, president and CEO of ArtsQuest.

Mugrauer says he sketched out images on a drawing pad like he would for a tattoo, but then spent his time creating the digital illustration on his iPad. The final piece includes a steel guitar, the iconic blast furnaces at SteelStacks, a nod to the original Musikfest logo and more.

“I really wanted to share what I think of Musikfest, as well as represent my art form and my style of doing things,” Mugrauer said. “The goal was to have those two concepts converge and result in a great work of art.”
