EASTON, Pa. - A trial is underway for an Allentown woman who admitted to giving birth to a baby in the bathroom of a Northampton County restaurant and then leaving him to die.
A jury has been selected in the trial of Amanda Hein. Opening arguments are slated to begin Monday afternoon.
Police say Hein gave birth to a baby boy in the bathroom of Starter's Pub in Lower Saucon Township last August.
Investigators say she wrapped the baby in a plastic bag, then left him in the toilet tank.
The cleaning crew found the baby the next day.
In March, Hein pleaded guilty to a general count of homicide. The jury will decide if she is guilty of first degree or third degree murder.
In exchange for the guilty plea, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli agreed not to seek the death penalty.
If Hein is convicted of first degree murder, she will get life without the possibility of parole.
A third degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison.
