Truck slams into porch of Bethlehem home

Authorities advise homeowner area is not stable

BETHLEHEM, Pa - Tense moments for a Bethlehem couple as a box truck ran off the road and crashed into the front of their house Sunday afternoon. It happened in the 700 block of Wyandotte Street.

"I thought it was an explosion, it was very loud and the whole house shook," said homeowner Martin Silva.

Silva and his wife were sitting in their living room watching TV when the box truck smashed into their front porch.

"My wife came in, she was screaming and I didn't know what happened and when I came I saw the whole front porch was gone," said Silva.

He says the truck's brakes went out and the driver couldn't stop, hitting a car further up the street as well as Silva's car and porch and swiping the side of the house next door.

"He said he veered into the house so he wouldn't be rolling down the hill in a big truck," said Silva.

Police and fire crews spent hours trying to clear the mess, wrapping the Silva's home in yellow tape and setting up barriers.

Silva can't use his front door and the bricks from his porch are still scattered on the sidewalk.

But despite the damage, he says he knows it could have been a lot worse.

"I'm glad it's just this, this is something that can be fixed you know and nobody got hurt," said Silva.
