Speed, travel restrictions lifted on Pa. Turnpike, major highways

PennDOT has removed speed limit restrictions that were imposed on highways because of Wednesday's storm.

Roads on which speed limit restrictions had been reduced to 45 mph included:

  • Interstate 78 in Berks, Lehigh and Northampton counties
  • Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County
  • US 22 in Lehigh and Northampton counties
  • Interstates 76, 95, 476, 676;
  • U.S. Routes 1, 30, 202, 422
  • State Routes 63, 100 Spur and 309

The speed limit had been reduced to 45 mph on the Pennsylvania Turnpike statewide as well. These have been lifted with the following exception.

Due to weather the Pennsylvania Turnpike has restricted the speed limit to 45 miles per hour between the New Stanton Interchange and the Delaware River Bridge #359.

Traffic advisories about the Pennsylvania Turnpike can be found at www.paturnpike.com.

As road crews continue to work clearing the highways of snow, PennDOT urges people to travel at safe speeds for current conditions no matter what the posted speed limit.

Also, PennDOT has lifted all other restrictions on traffic, as of midnight Wednesday:

  • All commercial traffic had been banned on Interstate 78 in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
  • Empty straight CDL-weighted trucks, tractors hauling double trailers, tractors hauling empty trailers, trailers pulled by passenger vehicles and pick-up trucks, motorcycles and recreational vehicles, or RVs, were banned on the Turnpike.

The agency reminds motorists to allow plenty of space when driving near plow trucks and never pass a truck that is actively plowing or spreading salt.
