Two restaurants close up shop in downtown Allentown

grain. and Centro calling it a day

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The downtown Allentown restaurant Grain is shutting its doors for good, on the same day that its restaurant neighbor, Centro, abruptly closed up shop."It's been an awesome opportunity to be part of Allentown's revitalization, with every growing city there's going to be obstacles," said Grain co-owner Christian Duarte.

Duarte and his partner, known as the Bayou Boys, announced Wednesday that the restaurant will officially close on July 22 after nearly three years in business.

"We realized quickly that the space wasn't being used to its optimal capability," said Duarte.

While grain. will soon be no more, the Bayou Boys also own Queen City BBQ, Cork & Cage and the Bayou Restaurants in Bethlehem and Easton.

They say they've gotten feedback from their customers at Grain. who say they like a more shared community space in restaurants and less of a private-dining feel.

"Taking a harder look, they're going to do a little renovation and revisit the space," said Duarte.

The owner of the property, City Center Investment Corp., released a statement in response to the shutdown that reads in part, "Their customer base – mostly millennials – desires a more open space to gather, so we agreed the time is right to renovate. Stay tuned."

"Stay tuned, there's definitely more on the horizon," said Duarte.

Gift cards to grain. will be accepted at Queen City BBQ, Cork & Cage and both The Bayou locations.

City Center spokesman Jeff Vaughan also confirmed to 69 News that Centro has closed, as well. No reason was given.
