UGI formally responds to PUC report on 2011 gas explosion

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - UGI has issued a formal response to a report released in June that said the company did not do enough to prevent the 2011 gas explosion leveled an Allentown city block and left 5 people dead.

UGI's response was submitted to the state Public Utility Commission Monday.

In the statement, UGI says it agreed to speed up the replacement of cast iron mains over the next 20 years as well as do more leak surveys.

However, the company asserted that readings before and after the explosion were satisfactory, and the main involved in the accident showed no warning signs of failure.

The statement did not mention if UGI would accept a proposed $386,000 fine handed down by the PUC. But officials say the company will challenge the penalty.
