Upper Macungie police name chief

UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - Upper Macungie Township will soon have its own police department and a man with 25 years of law enforcement and military leadership experience will be at its helm.

Edgardo A. Colón, 45, of Bethlehem will head the force, a press release said.  He'll begin in August, the police force will officially start work on January 1st of next year.  Between August and January, Colón will be working with the Supervisors on hiring and transitioning the Township's police protection from the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department to the Upper Macungie Township Police Department.

Colón currently serves as a Lieutenant and Station Commander with the Pennsylvania State Police Troop M in Fogelsville.

He served in the Marine Corps in the '80s and then graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in 1991.

Township Supervisors said they recently worked closely with Colón during a renovation project for the State Police barracks which are owned by Upper Macungie Township.

His resume was "impeccable" and his letters of recommendation were "outstanding," Supervisors said in a news release.

"His experience, command style, strong work ethic and compassion as a law enforcement officer has been proven and tested. We believe that his fluency in Spanish is an asset to his law enforcement role and brings diversity to our township," the release continued.

Last month the Township Supervisors voted to form their own department, effectively leaving the Berks-Lehigh Regional Police Department.

The Township said it wanted more of a say in how the force operated because it paid the most money into it but that never happened.
