Veterans Day ceremony honors vets in Allentown

ALLENTOWN, PA. - There was a bit of a history lesson at an Allentown Veterans Day ceremony.

The United Veterans of Wars of Allentown held its event inside the Lehigh County Government Center Monday afternoon.

All veterans were welcomed and honored.

The President of the organization gave a little background on Veterans Day.

The event was originally called "Armistice Day."

It was created in 1918 to honor World War One vets.

But the day was expanded to honor all service-members due in part to organizations like the United Veterans of Wars.

"Since we've had many conflicts since WWI, the Veterans Organization lobbied Congress to change it into Veterans Day which is what we have today, said Sheila Berg of the United Veterans of Wars.

Organizers thanked the veterans in the crowd and those they say were there "in spirit."
