Walnutport man's body recovered from Lake Ontario in NY

Officials: Mark Deiter went down with sinking boat

SCRIBA, N.Y. - Authorities said they have recovered the body of a Northampton County man who died when his boat sank on Lake Ontario in New York over the weekend.

Mark Deiter, 56, of Walnutport, was fishing with two other people when their 23-foot motor vessel began taking on water about a mile off the town of Scriba around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Oswego County sheriff's office.

The two others jumped out and used their floatation devices and a cooler to stay afloat until they were rescued by other fishermen around 90 minutes later.

Deputies said Deiter remained on the boat as it sank. A search by the U.S. Coast Guard and local police and emergency crews was launched.

Officials said his body was recovered Monday after being found inside the boat in about 100 feet of water, about three-quarters of a mile from the shore of Sunset Bay Park.
