Weather makes for tricky roads

Weather makes for tricky roads

Drivers had their hands full throughout the Lehigh Valley on Wednesday with an early afternoon snow fall which ended in rain that lasted into the evening, and caused icy conditions on some roads.

Wednesday afternoon, a tractor trailer on I-78 ended with its cab hanging off the Saucon Creek Viaduct in Northampton County, snarling traffic for miles well into the rush hour.

PennDot spokesperson Ron Young at the district office in Allentown said "Most things are wet, elevated roadways such as that viaduct may be icy due to air underneath it so it gets colder."

Young added the mixed precipitation isn't always easy to prepare for especially when it comes to pre-treating the roadways.

"When we have weather reports of potential mix of rain and snow a lot of times they won't because the material when it's on the road surface it dries once they put it down, but if the rain comes down it'll get washed away." said Young.

Young said salt trucks will be out into the night, salting the roadways to avoid icy conditions.
