Whitehall Township discusses delaying Lidl sidewalk installation

WHITEHALL TWP., Pa. - The Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners at its Tuesday workshop meeting discussed a proposed ordinance deferring the installation of sidewalks along the MacArthur Road frontage of Lidl grocery store.

Board Vice-President Dennis Hower said this particular issue should lead into a larger discussion on the township’s tendency to delay building sidewalks on certain properties, creating an irregular patchwork system where some places have sidewalks and others do not.

Lidl had been granted conditional approval for the building of a 37,000 square foot store earlier in the year pending PennDOT approval.

Lidl is slated to open sometime later this year or early 2018 and will be located on 2945 MacArthur Road, north of Gilboy Ford.

Township Engineer Frank Clark said Lidl is still negotiating with PennDOT at this time. Among the changes the store’s construction will bring is the movement of the Eberhart-145 intersection south 12 to 15 feet.

In other business, the Board discussed an ordinance accepting a proposal for the purchase of a 2018 Pierce Enforcer Pumper Fire Truck for the Whitehall Fire Department’s Egypt fire station. Deputy Mayor John Meyers said the Firemen’s Relief Association will contribute to the cost of the truck.

The Board also did a second reading of an ordinance authorizing the mayor to enter a license agreement with Darryl J. and Holly I. Messinger to allow for the encroachment of a proposed deck into an existing drainage and utility easement at 4648 Schimmel Court.

The Board did a second reading on an ordinance rezoning a seven-acre piece of land at 3665 MacArthur Road. The parcel of land, owned by Theresa Lauser, would be changed from an open space residential/agricultural area to a local/community commercial area.

Board Members Linda Snyder and Joseph Marx Jr. were absent.
