Wire Mill Bridge project discussed in Lehigh County

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Lehigh County Commissioners received a presentation on plans for a new Wire Mill Bridge in Allentown during Wednesday night's meeting.

Brian Garman, an engineer with NTM Engineering, told commissioners that a new bridge over Little Lehigh Creek will replace the current "structurally deficient" one. Plans are for a structure that will be 56 feet wide - up from 42 feet -  and feature a concrete deck with raised sidewalks on both sides. The total project will cost between $4 and $6 million.

The project is expected to be conducted in two phrases, beginning in 2019 and 2020 with a winter shutdown, according to Garman.

In other business, commissioners approved a contract between the county and RBA Professional Date Systems, Inc. to provide the county court system with a new jury management software system. The State College-based company has been creating software program for government agencies, educational, finance and non-profit organizations throughout Pennsylvania since 1978.

The deal with RBA will accomplish two goals, according to Commissioner Thomas Creighton, a sponsor of the resolution. First it will provide the county with a web based software system with a SQL server backbone. Second, the jury management system will provides jurors with the chance to answer the juror questionnaire online ,as well as communicate online with court staff. The county will pay RBA $72,000 for the service.

In addition, commissioners approved a contract with seven Spanish interpreters to provide translation services for the court and court related offices. For point of reference, during 2016 the county court received more than 3,400 interpreting requests. Of those, 95 percent were for Spanish interpreters.
