Supervisor allegedly helped herself to gift cards on company account

L. SAUCON TWP., Pa. - An Easton woman tasked with buying groceries for a rehab center allegedly helped herself to about $800 worth of gift cards on the company’s dime.

Alexis M. Smith, of South Third Street, faces six counts each of theft by deception and receiving stolen property for after allegedly purchasing six Visa gift cards in July and August. Lower Saucon Township police filed charges against the 24-year-old on Aug. 21, and District Judge Jacqueline Taschner arraigned her Friday night, setting bail at $15,000 with a 10 percent cash option.

The nursing director with Weston Rehabilitation Center told police in August that she had hired Smith on June 1 as a supervisor to work in the facility’s kitchen. Part of her duties was purchasing food and supplies at the nearby Giant grocery store, according to court records. Smith was authorized to sign for supplies on the company’s account.

A review of receipts revealed that Smith was allegedly purchasing gift cards on the company account and keeping them for herself. Security at Giant prevented account details for Weston, and investigators allegedly found the fraudulent purchases.

In July, Smith allegedly purchased two $50 and two $100 gift cards. In August, she allegedly purchased two gift cards totaling $450. The purchases included about $30 in activation fees. Police confirmed she was spotted on video surveillance purchasing the gift cards.

Smith failed to post bail and was sent to Northampton County Prison to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 12.
