Woman discovers man hiding from police in her car

Authorities said he ran from a traffic stop

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Authorities said an Allentown woman on her way to work was surprised to find a man who had just run from police hiding in her backseat.

Alan O. Ongiri is now facing charges after making the woman drive him to a Coopersburg area hotel.

Allentown police charged Ongiri with criminal trespass, false imprisonment and reckless endangerment for what started a traffic stop. District Judge Karen Devine arraigned the 43-year-old Saturday morning, setting bail at $50,000 with a 10 percent cash option.

Allentown police were dispatched to Fourth and Emaus Avenue about 2 p.m. Jan. 27 to assist Salisbury Township police with a traffic stop. The suspect, later identified as Ongiri, ran from the stop, according to court records.

Records do not indicate the nature of the traffic stop.

Authorities said he sprinted across Emaus Avenue, ditching his shirt and jumping a fence in the 200 block of West Emaus Avenue. Ongiri allegedly jumped a fence and hid in a garage behind a house in the 100 block of South Second Street, according to records.

Police said he hid in the backseat of a car parked in the garage. As the homeowner drove to work along Route 309, Ongiri appeared and told the woman where she should take him, police said.

She dropped him off at a Knights Inn and picked him out of a lineup the following day. Police then issued a warrant for his arrest.

Ongiri, of the 800 block of Delaware Avenue in Fountain Hill, failed to post bail following his arraignment. He was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing tentatively scheduled for Feb. 13.
