Woman seeks to change Lehigh Co. bus stop intersection

Woman petitions for changes after bus stop deaths

HANOVER TWP., Pa. - More than a week has passed since a fatal accident in Hanover Twp., Lehigh Co., claimed the lives of two men and critically hurt two others while they waited at a bus stop at the intersection of Cascade Drive and Race Street.

Felix Morales says he worked with the men involved in last week's accident at the industrial park.

He and his fiancée, Shanell Rivera, said there have been several accidents in the same location in the past and having a bus stop there only puts people in danger.

"There's been accidents there before but nothing like this --it's just dangerous. That bus stop should not be there. It's too small on the other side of the street," said Morales.

After the accident, Rivera took matters into her own hands and decided to start a petition to get the bus stop moved to the other side of the street and a second petition to have a stop light added at the intersection.

"There's been so many accidents there.  I don't know why it takes people to die for something to get done," said Rivera.

Rivera already has close to 300 signatures on each petition and plans to get 3,000.

Wednesday night, the couple took their concerns along with their petitions to township council, which plans to address the issue in next month's meeting.

"When it comes home it kind of hits you that other people should care and I always say it takes one person to do something and I said I'd be that one to do it," said Rivera.

Rivera says anyone who is interested in signing the petition can call her and Morales at 610-462-7179.
