SLATINGTON, Pa. - An employee of a fireworks company in Lehigh County was injured in an explosion Friday morning.

The blast happened around 7:20 a.m. at Celebration Fireworks in Slatington.

The female employee was assembling an electronic match when it exploded, according to the company's owner, John Kemps.

Both of the woman's hands were injured in the explosion. She was taken to the hospital for treatment.

There was a small fire, but it was quickly put out. Fire crews, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Allentown Bomb Squad responded to the scene.

Kemps said the company takes safety very seriously and that nothing like this has happened before. He said everything will be re-evaluated to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Celebration Fireworks' employees said they are devastated by the incident and that they are a very close-knit family-like company.

The workers are taking a pause for now, but the owner said the company will work to fulfill orders for their customers.

The company provides fireworks for many area municipal displays like Bethlehem and Brienigsville.
