Would-be robber with handgun told 'no' when he asked victim for money, cell phone, police say

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - A would-be robber with a gun walked away empty-handed after he tried unsuccessfully to get to a Lehigh University student to turn over his money and cell phone, officials said.

Stephen M. Rosa tried to rob the student at gunpoint on the sidewalk in the 400 block of Fillmore Street in Bethlehem around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, officials said.

Rosa, pointing a dark .22 caliber pistol at the victim's chest, demanded money several times, and when he said he didn't have any on him, Rosa wanted the cell phone he had in his hand, officials said.

The victim told Rosa no and walked away, and when the victim looked over his shoulder he could see Rosa leaving the area, officials said.

Based on the victim's description, police picked up Rosa, who was seen running in the area, officials said, adding that Rosa's handgun was found nearby,

Police determined that Rosa did not have a license to carry the weapon, and during questioning, Rosa told a detective that he had been convicted of drug possession with intent to deliver, officials said.

Rosa, 19, of 922 East Morton St., Bethlehem, was charged with robbery, carrying a firearm without a license and illegally possessing a firearm and committed to the Northampton County Prison on $150,000 bail, according to court documents.

A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Nov. 25.
