Local Democrats keep close eye on Obama

Democratic Watch Party

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - There were some cheers and some puzzled looks from Democrats in Bethlehem at a local viewing party. Many say they have a good feeling after the debate.

It's a time in the campaign where a whole nation is hanging on the words of two men going face to face.

Before the debate some said they wanted to hear words that could widen the lead President Barack Obama has over Mitt Romney.

"I think he needs to continue to showcase his personal stories," said Daniel Kelly, an Obama supporter. "Personal stories in the '08 campaign are what got him the victory. I think tonight he needs to connect and relate back to the constituents."

The people listening were of all ages: high school students who will vote for the first time to business owners listening to tax plans from both individuals.

"For 18 months he's been running on this tax plan and now five weeks before the election he's saying that his big bold idea is ... never mind, said President Barack Obama.

In the end, it doesn't look like one candidate delivered a knockout blow.

Some say that is to be expected.

"If you went over the last 40 or 50 years of presidential elections, the debates haven't really been game changers," said John Callahan, mayor of Bethlehem.

People say they understand the race will probably get closer after the debate, and also agree it's good to see the candidates get together face-to-face.
