Man, 19, killed, another wounded in shooting near playground

Police investigate Allentown shooting death

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A deadly shooting has homicide detectives on the hunt for clues.

The bullets flew Wednesday night near Sixth and Tilghman streets in Allentown. Two men were hit. One of the victims, Anthony Santiago, didn't make it. The other was shot in the foot.

As of Thursday afternoon, police weren't saying much about their investigation except that it was progressing.

"I heard the shots," said Andrea Rivera. "It was like a can. Like a, 'bop. bop. bop.'"

Around 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, police said Santiago, 19, of Allentown, was shot in the chest just a few feet from Stevens Playground. He later died at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

The second man, who was shot in the foot, is expected to be okay, police said.

"I feel a little bit upset," said Rivera, who now worries for her own family, which includes a baby grandson. "It's a park right here. Kids was playing, so it makes me upset 'cause kids could have got hurt."

At this time, it's still a mystery as to why Santiago was killed, who pulled the trigger and why.

While that's enough to keep some indoors, it wasn't for Travis Wright and his family.

"There are other parks we can go to. I'm not too worried about it," he said, standing next to his 4-year-old son.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to contact the Allentown Police Department at 610-437-7721 or 610-437-7751.
