Man accused in fatal crash returned to Pennsylvania to face charges

Oliver Savage was involved in crash that killed Breinigsville man

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A Maryland man accused of causing a crash that killed a Lehigh County man has been returned to Pennsylvania to face charges.

Oliver Savage was arraigned Tuesday night on charges of criminal homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, recklessly endangering another person, careless driving, following too closely and driving at an unsafe speed.

The accident, involving two tractor trailers and a minivan, happened Feb. 10 in the 9200 block of Hamilton Boulevard, at Newtown Road, in Upper Macungie Township.

The minivan, driven by James Knappenberger, 77, of Breinigsville, was stopped in the northbound lane at the intersection when a tractor trailer, driven by Savage, couldn't stop and hit the back of the minivan.

The impact pushed the minivan into the southbound lane, where it was hit by another tractor trailer.

Knappenberger died at the scene, officials said. No one else was injured.

Savage, 56, of Tall Timbers, Maryland, is being held at the Lehigh County Prison without bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 13.
