Man accused of assaulting officer, DUI

Alex W. Smith faces a long list of charges.

LOWER NAZARETH TWP.,, Pa. - A 23-year-old Nazareth man is facing a list of charges after police say he assaulted a police officer while resisting arrest.

Colonial Regional Police said officers were at the scene of a DUI crash on Nazareth Pike just north of Daniels Road early Sunday. The road was closed while crews repaired a damaged utility pole.

Traffic was being rerouted when a car driven by Alex W. Smith of South Fairview Street in Nazareth approached the area around 2:50 a.m. and refused to turn around, police said.

Officers said Smith smelled like alcohol, and his speech was slurred, so they took his car keys and told him to stay in the car.

While waiting for back up, police said Smith left the car and ran away, into the backyard of 451 Nazareth Pike in Lower Nazareth Twp., Northampton County.

Police said they were able to tackle him after he tripped jumping a row of bushes, but then Smith started resisting arrest and hit an officer in the mouth, causing a bloody and swollen lip.

Smith got away, and ran towards Daniels Road.  Several surrounding police agencies joined in the search for him, but they couldn't find him, police said.

Police had Smith's ID from the original traffic stop, so they called his parents, who eventually talked him into turning himself in, police said.

He was arraigned and charged with: aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, escape, DUI, disorderly conduct and harassment.

Police said he was on an active parole from state police, and allegedly violated parole as well.

He was taken to Northampton County Prison on $25,000 bail.
