Man allegedly killed by neighbor to be buried with honors

LAURELDALE, Pa. - One man continues to fight for his life as a community deals with the loss of another man.

A friend and neighbor is being remembered fondly as new details emerged Wednesday about what led up to a deadly shooting in the quiet borough of Laureldale, Berks Co.

An American flag was flying at half staff, and black memorial drapes were hanging outside the Goodwill Fire Company in nearby Hyde Park. The department is mourning the loss of Robert Goda, better known as Bobby, a volunteer fire police officer.

"He enjoyed his job. This was Bobby's life. He's gonna be greatly missed," said David Kupp, a fire police officer who worked alongside Bobby.

Goda, 64, was gunned down at point-blank range on his front porch Tuesday afternoon, police said. According to investigators, Goda and his neighbor, Bruce Muth, had an ongoing feud for years.

Muth, 49, told police Goda's dog, Brodi, would continually go to the bathroom in his yard.

"It kind of started escalating to a breaking point about two-and-a-half months ago," said Erin Nitsche, who lives directly across the street from Goda. "It was just if anything or anybody ever stepped foot in his yard he would have issues with."

On Tuesday afternoon, Muth told police he was awakened by Brodi barking. That's when he pulled out his revolver, walked around Goda's house and allegedly shot him twice.

"Everybody knows everybody in this town, and this is very abnormal for this to happen here," said Mayor Fred Feltenberger, of Laureldale.

"What it was over I just think is totally ridiculous. Nobody should be shot because of a dog," said Kupp.

The shooting didn't end there. A handyman, Irvin Ojea, 51, found the dog and was walking it down the street when he was shot in the arm, said police.

"It has never happened to our neighborhood before, and it's kind of scary. It hit really close to home this time," said Nitsche.

Ojea was last listed in critical condition at Reading Hospital.

Services for Goda will be held Monday at 9:30 am at Walter R. Christ Funeral Home,  3300 Kutztown Rd., Laureldale. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter Township.

Viewings will be held Sunday from 5 - 8 p.m. and Monday from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home.

Officials said they plan to give Goda full honors.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the funeral home to help with final expenses.

Muth has been charged with first and third degree murder and aggravated assault, among other charges.
