Man ordered to trial in deadly assault of ex-girlfriend on KU campus

Man ordered to trial in deadly assault of ex-girlfriend

FLEETWOOD, Pa. - A man already serving time for the assault of his ex-girlfriend in 2008 was back in court Thursday.

Michael Morrone waived his preliminary hearing on a 3rd degree murder charge.

His ex-girlfriend, Christine McGhee was left in a vegetative state after being dragged through a parking lot on the campus of Kutztown University nearly four years ago.
McGhee, of Warminster Twp., Bucks Co., died in March.

Morrone was quiet as he left district court in Fleetwood, but the prosecutor in the case had plenty to say about Morrone, charging the 24-year-old New Jersey man in McGhee's death.

Morrone picked up McGhee up at a party on Dec. 4, 2008, and drove to the parking lot outside her Kutztown University dorm, police said.

The couple were fighting when Morrone pushed McGhee out of his truck, dragging her through the parking lot, police said. McGhee suffered a head injury that left her in a vegetative state. She died on Mar. 18, 2012.

"The allegation that we have made at this time is that she died as the result of the injuries she suffered in December of 2008," said Berks County Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Kurlrland.

Morrone was convicted of aggravated assault in 2010; he is serving a five to 20 year sentence.

If convicted of 3rd degree murder, Morrone could face an additional sentence of eight to 20 years.
"Whatever happens, there is not a good result for the family. They lost their daughter, and I think it's fair to say that they want to see that justice is done, as anyone would in that circumstance or in the community," said Kurland.

Morrone is scheduled to be back in court for a formal arraignment June 27, although it's possible he will waive that appearance.
