Man Sentenced For Student Assault

READING, Pa. - A New Jersey man was ordered to spend up to 20 years in prison and pay more than $2.2-million in restitution for assaulting a Kutztown University student.

In March, a Berks County jury convicted Michael Morrone of all charges for the December, 2008 incident.

Today, Morrone took the witness stand and said he felt the deepest sorrow, remorse, and sympathy for the victim, Christine McGhee, and her family.

McGhee attended the hearing in a wheelchair, but WFMZ's Melissa Fullerton said she did not appear to be awake.

A doctor testified during the trial in March that McGhee is in a minimally conscious state and unable to interact with her environment.

On the stand today, Morrone said he never meant for any of it to happen. He described McGhee, who was a sophomore at K.U. at the time, as a great girl whose family treated him well.

Police said Morrone pushed McGhee out of his truck and then dragged her through a university parking lot. He took off.

McGhee's brother, father, and mother testified during the hearing.

"Every day we are reminded of the tragedy and every day we tend to Christine so she can just survive and live a healthy, not happy, life," said James McGhee, IV, Christine's brother.

"What I want from Mr. Morrone is to recognize what he has done and be responsible for it," said Dawn McGhee, Christine's mother.

The judge ordered Morrone to spend five to 20 years in state prison for aggravated assault conviction.

He was also ordered to serve a concurrent sentence of nine month to seven years for his conviction of causing an accident involving death or personal injury.

The judge said Morrone must also pay McGhee and her family more than $2.2-million in restitution for insurance and medical costs, plus court costs
