Man wanted after chase through Berks now in custody

Harold Davis Jr. hospitalized with chest pains, arraigned at bedside

Fugitive captured after foot chase, admitted to hospital

CAERNARVON TWP., Pa. - Harold Davis Jr. is in custody, captured early Friday morning not far from where the search for the wanted man started nearly 24 hours earlier.

Davis, 56, of Philadelphia, was captured around 7 a.m. Friday after a foot pursuit through the woods in Caernarvon Twp., Berks Co., but rather than sitting in a jail cell, he's lying in a hospital bed.

"Mr. Davis has been admitted to the Reading Hospital," said Tpr. David Beohm, Pa. State Police.

Davis left behind a handful of clues at the Chestnut Hill Archery Club On Quarry Road in New Morgan, police said.

"You could tell somebody had been in there and used the restroom to sleep in," said Chief Paul Stolz, Caernarvon Twp. Police Dept. "The place, which was heated, and there was a pillow that would not normally be there."

The window was broken and Davis was nowhere to be found until an officer spotted him near Route 10, police said.

"He saw what appeared to be Mr. Davis ducked behind the guard rail. Then he got out of his car and got into a foot pursuit off into the woods," Beohm said.

Davis was captured nearly 24 hours after a wild chase on Interstate 176. A routine truck inspection showed he was wanted on robbery charges in Florida.

Davis then took off in this truck, with a trooper on board holding onto the mirror, firing shots at his tires and into his engine, police said.

They said he rammed a police cruiser and eventually crashed and high-tailed it into the woods, starting what would become an all-out search.

Davis was arraigned by a judge at his hospital bedside Friday on aggravated assault and other charges. He will be under 24-hour guard by Berks County sheriff's deputies until doctors determine he is medically fit to leave the hospital, police said.
